ePub and Kindle production
We provide formatting services for the Amazon Kindle and other eReaders. We provide files in .mobi format for Amazon and in .epub format for other distributors.
Formatting a book for the Kindle is essentially a matter of converting the page layout files or PDFs into HTML and then tweaking that HTML so the final result looks good on Kindle devices. There are also usability issues to consider when formatting a book for Kindle. You want to make sure the various parts of the book — the cover, the start of the text, and table of contents, for example — are properly linked so they can be accessed from the Kindle’s menu. Also, to be even more reader friendly, you will want to set up a special table of contents file so Kindle users can use the five-way controller to quickly move from chapter to chapter in your Kindle ebook.
If you're new to eBooks, see our blog post Every Author Needs an eReader for some basic information.
Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing site provides a starting point for information on Kindle formatting, but it takes a little more than basic HTML knowledge to create a presentable Kindle ebook. If you’d like to tackle Kindle eBook formatting on your own, here’s a road map for creating a basic Kindle eBook. This will get the job done, but without some of the bells and whistles. If you want to delve more deeply into the subject, see Kindle Formatting: The Complete Guide to Formatting Books for the Amazon Kindle by Joshua Talent.
Please let us know if you’d like your book formatted for the Kindle or any other eBook format. We’ll do what we can to help.
Formatting your book for Kindle is just a small part of the process of publishing your book. First, you need a good story for novels and solid information for nonfiction books. Then you need a good editor, someone who will catch typos and grammar problems, who will help you clean up or unravel untidy sentence structure, and who will alert you to problems with flow and consistency. After you have published your Kindle book on Amazon, you will need to consider ways to market it. One promotional vehicle nearly every book publicist recommends is to have a website for you and/or your book. The Roberts Group has professional editors who have been in the business for more than 20 years and website developers who keep on top of the latest technology. We can help you increase your chances of creating a successful Kindle book.
Need a free Kindle App?
If you don’t have a Kindle but want to get a sense of how a Kindle ebook looks, download one of the Free Kindle Apps. They are available for the PC, Mac, iPhone, Blackberry, Android, iPad, and Windows 7 phones. Once you’ve installed the app, you can download any of the thousands of free Kindle books available on Amazon. You can also download free samples of any paid book on Amazon. If you want to sample our work, have a look at these titles:
- The Concierge Manual
- One Desert Jet Turner; A Perspective on Youth, Fighter Aircraft, and Cold War
- Book of Mercy
- Ancestors’ Wake

Note that a given eBook may look slightly different from one device to another. That’s because each device has a different page size, has different fonts available, and provides different margins. Generally speaking, though, the eBook will look similar on the various devices.
Another way to go is to get the free Kindle Previewer. This software allows you to get an idea how the eBook you’re creating would look on various devices including the Kindle, Kindle DX, Kindle for iPhone, and Kindle for iPad.
